Paintings

The types of paintings on which we perform conservation treatments include oil paintings, acrylics, and mixed media.

Treatment of paintings may include:

  • Surface cleaning
  • Varnish removal
  • Overpaint removal
  • Surface consolidation (flaking or powdering paint and pigment layers)
  • Removal and treatment of mould, surface bloom and blanching
  • Tear repair
  • Flattening (removal/reduction of distortions)
  • Strip and full lining
  • Restretching
  • Substrate repair (paintings on board)
  • Filling and inpainting areas of loss
  • Application of new varnish
  • Provision of advice regarding painting care, mounting and display
  • Provision of documentation (condition reports, treatment assessments, treatment reports)
