Bark Paintings

The type of conservation work that we undertake on bark paintings includes:

  • Surface cleaning
  • Paint layer consolidation
  • Infilling and inpainting in areas of loss (using specifically-sourced ochres and pigments, and traditional materials)
  • Provision of advice regarding bark painting care, mounting and display
  • Provision of documentation (condition reports, treatment assessments, treatment reports)

We have developed a new system for the mounting and display of bark paintings in which the work is mounted onto a fabric-covered board. The mounting system allows the bark to move freely (i.e. it is not restricted) so that cracking, splitting and destabilisation of the paint layer is significantly reduced. In addition, no part of the mounting system is adhered or permanently attached to the bark, preserving the integrity of the artwork.
